Working on Harbor Wetlands with the National Aquarium
The Waterfront Partnership joined the National Aquarium last week for a day of planting at their new Harbor Wetland installation! This much-anticipated immersive exhibit will be opening in the Inner Harbor later this year. We were thrilled to play a hands-on role in getting it ready for the public to enjoy while learning all about the work that went in to this exciting project!
The Harbor Wetland exhibit will be a free, outdoor experience outside the aquarium. The exhibit is a recreation of the salt marshes that used to comprise what is now Baltimore city- complete with 39,625 grasses and shrubs that are native to Maryland. Visitors will be able to experience the salt marsh by walking out onto a floating dock on the Inner Harbor.
In addition to being an immersive learning tool, this salt marsh will provide environmental benefits for the surrounding area and harbor! The salt marsh will provide a welcoming habitat for local wildlife including night herons, blue crabs, eels, and oysters; and plants will also help filter the water by removing excess nitrogen.
Working alongside other volunteers and National Aquarium staff, our team planted over 4,000 native grasses that will soon become a haven for local wildlife.
We’re so excited to see this exhibit come to fruition, and proud to work alongside the National Aquarium as they continue to create fun, educational, and environmentally beneficial fixtures in Baltimore’s waterfront district!
