5 Things to Expect at Baltimore by Baltimore this Weekend

This month’s Baltimore by Baltimore brings a Harbor Hootenanny to the Inner Harbor Amphitheater! Hosted by Baltimore-based musician, teacher, and organizer Brad Kolodner, this show will be a celebration of Baltimore’s vibrant acoustic roots music scene.

Here are 5 things to expect when you join us this Saturday, July 6th for Baltimore by Baltimore: Harbor Hootenanny

#1: Baltimore-made banjos on stage

Banjos are a hallmark of Old Time music everywhere, including Baltimore!

The banjo has a long and complex history in Baltimore, and has been played here longer than you might imagine. Today, Baltimore’s contemporary banjo scene includes artisans like Pete Ross, who uses specially grown gourds to make banjos like the one pictured here.
On Saturday, you can watch these banjos in action!

#2: A range of dance styles…

Tap, two step, and more!

Dance is a big part of Old Time music, and you can expect to see some experts showing off their steps on stage. The dance performances of the day include Baltimore Honky Tonk, Becky Hill & Friends, and Baltimore Square Dance. You might be surprised by the variety of dance styles that are part of the Old Time Music scene!

#3 And to join in on the dance yourself!

Saturday’s show includes some social dancing too!

The term “social dance” refers to dance that is centered around participation versus performance. So bring your dancing boots on Saturday and be ready to join in as groups like Baltimore Square Dance give tutorials for all, regardless of experience. This type of social dance can be found in the history of community building in Maryland.

#4 A colorful and full marketplace

Be sure to scope out the tents on the promenade

featuring artists, makers, and community-oriented groups from Baltimore. Curated by local business advocate Kathleen Overman, Saturday’s marketplace will include a little bit of everything: from vintage clothing sold out of a bus to all natural, handmade soap and skincare.

#5 Food that screams “Baltimore”

Chicken, crabs, & crushes-

It doesn’t get better than that! The food and drink corner of the marketplace will feature some of our city’s favorite eats- including ready-to-crack crabs, Ekiben’s loaded sandwichs, and more. Bring your appetite and get ready to dig in.

We can’t wait to celebrate Baltimore’s acoustic roots music scene on Saturday! To see all the performers and vendors for the day, be sure to follow us on Instagram.
